There has been a king or queen of England since 400 AD.
The present queen is the great-great grand daughter of Queen Victoria.
The British monarchy gives us a important link to the past and British history - but do they do anything else?
What does the monarchy do for us?
The Queen has an important role to play in the British constitution. She dissolves parliament, appoints the prime minister (once they have been elected) and has official and ceremonial duties to perform.
The Queen is the supreme governor of the Church of England.
The Queen and the Prince of Wales own a lot of land in the UK - this is called the "crown estate" and is worth over £6bn.
The royal family play a big role in attracting tourists to the UK.
The royal family do a lot of work for charities and have set up many charitable foundations.
