The Media Activities for Form Time

The topics of newspapers, advertising and online media are all covered in these short activities. Each lesson tackled a specific area and students must demonstrate their understanding throughout. These lessons are designed to last around 20 minutes each, however, there are a number of suggestions if you wish to extend the activity.

Activity 1 – A World Without Media

In the first part of this lesson, students are introduced to the definition of ‘the media’ before going on to work in small groups to think about the difficulties that someone would face in a country where it was banned.

Activity 2 – Media Diary

Students must now complete a diary for 1 day. This is compared to that or other students to find similarities or differences and the amount of time spent engaging with different media is discussed.

Activity 3 – Differences Between Newspapers

In this activity, pupils are introduced to newspapers as an example of mass media and they begin to understand the differences between different types of newspaper.

Activity 4 – Advertising and Standards

Students are now familiarised with the rules of the ASA and must prepare an advert which is deliberately in breach of the advertising standards to demonstrate their understanding.

Activity 5 – ASA Adjudications

This activity looks more closely at the emotions experienced when seeing an advertisement. A series of ASA adjudications are discussed and then students must think of an advert they would like to complain about and why.

Activity 6 – Online Media

In the final activity, students study a number of different websites to find the different types of news available. As a class, they must discuss various aspects of this type of media including the advantages and disadvantages.
