The interview
In preparation for work experience at key stage 4, get the students used to interview situations.

An action plan is developed to help students understand how they can reach their goals in lifel.

Students use their research findings from the previous activity to find the most useful sources of online careers information.
Professional Skills Activities for Form Time
This series of activities for key stage 3 help to guide students through some of the skills they will need in the world of work. Broken down into individual topics, they are ideal for form periods and can be used individually to highlight particular learning requirements.
Activity 1 – The Handshake
Students may find shaking hands embarrassing, but is an important professional skill. This is a whole class activity that gives students some tips on how to deal with the situation and plenty of practice.
Activity 2 – The Interview
Working in pairs or threes, students agree on a job they will be interviewed for, then role play the scenario. The class must come up with a series of interview questions.
Activity 3 – Body Language
In this activity, students learn the importance of body language in an interview, in the workplace and also in school. Pupils must identify emotions that are demonstrated by classmates.
Activity 4 – Establishing Goals – The Lifewrite
Students will learn about the concept of a ‘lifewrite’ and then must consider what they want to be or have achieved by a certain age.
Activity 5 – Reaching Goals – The Plan
Now that students have identified where they want to be, they now need to think about how they will get there. Using a mindmap or spider diagram, they identify a goal and what would help them reach it.
Activity 6 – Clarifying Goals – Career Pathways
Having researched their goal, students are required to create a poster outlining their aim which will serve as a reminder of their plan.
