Options in Year 9 – 7 Activities for Tutor Time

These lessons and activities are an ideal way to supplement the options programme in your school during form periods. They can be used individually to tackle a particular problem, or used in sequence to help students make their choices.

Activity 1 – Which Way Now?

In this individual activity, students begin to understand the importance of the core subjects at key stage 4. They begin to think about the other subjects they would like to take.

Activity 2 – Sources of Options Advice

Students complete a worksheet of information sources and decide which is the best. As a class the decisions are discussed.

Activity 3 – Top 5 Mistakes When Making Options Choices

It is easy for students to be given lots of advice about options, but not so easy for them to make sense of the conflicting information. This activity helps them to identify some of the good and bad advice.

Activity 4 – Choosing Subjects

In this activity, students are given some reasons why they might choose a subject. Working firstly in pairs and then as a class, they need to identify the most sensible reasons.

Activity 5 – Skills Checklist

Students are given the opportunity in this activity to look at skills the currently have, ones which they identify as needing development and ones that they believe they will need to success in a particular subject.

Activity 6 – Schools Options Booklet

In this lesson, students are given the opportunity to study the school options choices and think about any questions they may have as a group.

Activity 7 – Action Planning

It is important that students consider their long term goals. In this final activity, pupils will need to think about what they plan to do aged 14-16, 16+ and 18+.
