Rights and responsibilities

Human Rights Form Time Activities
These lessons cover a number of learning outcomes from the citizenship curriculum. Broken down into seven individual activities, they are ideal for use during form periods. Students will understand the meaning or ‘rights’ and will consider their responsibilities as citizens.
Activity 1 – Rights and Responsibilities
In this introductory activity, students are advised about the definition of rights, civil & political rights , economic, social & cultural rights and responsibilities.
Activity 2 – Human Rights Videos
Students watch video case studies about this topic and must identify when rights have been abused or infringed.
Activity 3 – Forced Marriages
Using a real life example of a young woman being kidnapped, students look at the issue of this forced marriage and consider the rights of each party involved.
Activity 4 – Civil Rights in the USA
This activity looks at the reasons for the civil rights movement in America. Students must think about the purpose of these and are they a good thing?
Activity 5 – Historical Rights
Students must now look at three different documents and consider the reasons people may have had for including particular item to them.
Activity 6 – Human Rights Role Play
Using a series of scenarios, students assume the role of someone involved. The aim of the exercise it to highlight as many rights abuses that could happen in each scene.
Activity 7 – The Language of Money
In the final activity, students demonstrate their understanding on this topic be analysing a series of case studies to identify issues that are conflicting with rights laws.
