Gap Year Volunteering Activities for Tutor Time
Following on from the introduction to Gap Years lessons, these activities focus on volunteering during a break from education or work. The lessons contribute to the citizenship programme of study for key stage 4 and also encourage students to think about their career choices.
Activity 1 –What is a Volunteer
This lesson looks at the different types of volunteering opportunities, why people volunteer and what the benefits are of being part of a voluntary programme. Students work in groups to discuss their thoughts and ideas about volunteering .
Activity 2 – What are the Benefits of Volunteering
Working in small groups, students watch a series of video clips about different people and then complete a series of questions to help them review the information. The outcome of this lesson is for students to have an appreciation of why people choose to volunteer and what the benefits are to themselves and others.
