Critical Consumer Activities for Form Time
Consumerism is a hot topic at present, food miles, and fair trade and things we are told about when we shop. This series of activities looks at some of the many factors that influence us as consumers.
Activity 1 – Advertising and Ethics
In this lesson, students will take a look at advertising as a means of persuading people to buy something that has negative health consequences and how advertising rules have changed over the years.
Activity 2 – Buy Local or Buy Global
Lesson 2 looks at the type of produce that can be grown in the UK or imported from abroad. Students must consider agreements for and against the import of a product from overseas. While it is important to support developing countries, the second part of this activity looks at the benefits of buying locally produced food, with a particular emphasis on foods that are in season.
Activity 3 – Ethical industries
This 2 part exercise looks at some well known brands and how they were established from a business and moral perspective. Students work in small groups to research the topics.
