Why study alcohol?

Wine bottles and glasses

An introduction to the topic of alcohol awareness. How much is one unit? How many units are recommended? Students understand why units are used as a way of measuring alcohol consumption.

Get students measuring out what they think one unit looks like in this activity, then consider the mental, physical and social aspects of alcohol abuse.

Introduction

Demonstrate what 1 unit of alcohol means to the general public using slide 2.

Have a small wine glass, half-pint glass and a spirit glass filled with juice or squash to demonstrate what a unit is. Display slide 3. Demonstrate that alcohol strengths vary: add stronger diluted juice to existing glasses.

A larger wine glass should be introduced at this point to highlight pub practices.

Empty cans of strong lager and beer could also be used here.
