The aim of these KS4 lessons is to make students aware of the community involvement within volunteering and active citizenship, show them how to get involved and the possibilities open to them.

What is active citizenship?
In this initial lesson, students define key terms using collaborative activities.
Investigating the range of citizenship activities
Using guided research, students complete an engaging word association game to explore their opportunities as active citizens.
What's your sort of active citizenship?
Students identify what their preferences would be in terms of choosing a project (or starting a project) to get involved with.
Where do we start? How do we agree?
Groups of students use their previous work in this module to select a community project they would like to get involved with.

A comprehensive workbook for students, ideal for planning, recording and reflecting on their achievements as active citizens.

More About the Active Citizenship Teaching Resources
It is important that students at KS3 and KS4 are given the opportunity to participate in school-based and community based citizenship activities. This series of lesson plans and worksheets is a step-by-step plan to implement a project .
Lesson 1 – What is Active Citizenship
An initial exercise to establish the current level of understanding of the topic. This takes the form of a student activity, followed by a teacher led discussion.
Lesson 2 – Investigating the Range of Active Citizenship Activities
An individual or group exercise which identifies some specific opportunities available. Both short term and long term involvement is considered in this activity.
Lesson 3 – Conservation Issues
Students compare their own skills and preferences against those required for particular projects. They begin to consider particular areas of interest.
Lesson 4 – Where Do We Start? How Do We Agree
Working in groups, the class now begin to decide on a specific project. They must consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and ensure that they have documents reasons for the project and it’s aims.

A comprehensive student project workbook to help students record their learning on this subject as well as help them to develop and evaluate their project.
