Year 9 Options Programme
Using a fun game involving building a skeleton, students have to get to grips with the core GCSE subjects and their year 9 options.
Options subjects
Students use a skills checklist and a handy Powerpoint to explore key issues when choosing options.
Making the choice
This lesson is a reflective exercise linking the options choices to target setting and looking ahead to year 10.
Options in Year 9 Careers Teaching Resources
Some of your students may already know which subjects they intent to take at GCSE and others may not have decided as yet. In this series of lessons, we explain why some subjects are compulsory and which can be taken as options in your school.
Lesson 1 – Year 9 Options Programme
Students must complete 5 activities that conclude with them selecting 8 GCSE subjects. Three of these choices should be their ‘options’ which will be discussed further.
Lesson 2 – Options Subjects
In lesson 2, the choices made are now compared to the skills required and sources of information and advice are researched.
Lesson 3 – Deciding on Options
Students have now made their choices, but do they fit with the school timetable and what do students do if they don’t? This lesson is largely formed with a structured teacher led and class discussion followed by individual work to adjust their choices if necessary.
Lesson 4 – Making the Choice?
Now that choices have been made, students apply them to targets they should be setting for year 10.
